How to Apply for Financial Aid

The majority of pharmacy students borrow from a variety of loan programs to fund their education. Loans are money you borrow that must be repaid with interest, and some loans may involve extra fees.

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you should apply for financial aid even if you have not yet received an admission notification.

1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible.

  • Complete the FAFSA online.
  • USC’s Federal School Code is 001328.
  • Complete all student sections.
  • To apply for a Health Professions Student Loan, include your parent information (regardless of your dependency status).
  • You can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to complete the income section.

2. Complete the Financial Aid Supplement.

If more information is requested, be sure to respond within 30 days. After you have been admitted to the PharmD program, you will receive notification of your financial aid eligibility.

Educational Loan Programs

Many kinds of loans are available to you through the School’s Financial Aid Office. Most pharmacy students borrow from a variety of loan programs to fund their education. Loans must be repaid with interest, and some loans involve extra fees.

  • To be considered for the Health Professions Student Loan, complete the parental information on the FAFSA and submit a copy of your and your parents’ most recent federal tax return, including W-2 forms.
  • Loan amount varies every year based on availability of funds.
  • This is a need-based subsidized loan (no interest while in school) with a fixed interest rate of 5% and a 10-year repayment period that begins 12 months after graduation or if you fall below half-time enrollment.
  • If you are awarded this loan, it will automatically appear on your Statement of Financial Aid Eligibility. You will receive a notification from Student Financial Services to sign a promissory note in late July (fall promissory note) and December (spring promissory note).

  • If you need additional financing after you’ve borrowed the full Direct Unsubsidized Loan amount, you may wish to consider this low-interest, credit-based federal loan.

For privately financed education loans, you are not required to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. You may borrow up to the cost of attendance, including tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation.

We advise U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens to apply for all federal Title IV (Direct Stafford and Graduate PLUS loans) education loan programs available before considering private loans. Repayment terms of the federal loan programs are often more favorable than private loan programs.

  • Interest rates, origination and repayment fees are based on the creditworthiness of the student borrower and/or the co-borrower.
  • Repayment generally begins immediately after full loan disbursement.
  • In-school deferments, grace periods and forbearances may be available. Ask your lender for more information.

Depending on your specific qualifications, loan type and employment status, you may be eligible for loan forgiveness or repayment plans.

Options include:

  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, which forgives the remaining balance on your direct loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full time for a qualifying employer.
  • California State Loan Repayment Program, which aims to increase the number of healthcare providers, including pharmacists, practicing in federally designated California Health Professional Shortage Areas. This program assists with repayment of eligible educational loans that meet program requirements.
  • Washington State’s Health Professionals Program encourages licensed health professionals to provide primary care at approved sites in rural or underserved areas, and provides financial assistance through conditional scholarships or loan repayment. Many types of providers are eligible, including pharmacists. Healthcare sites, such as clinics, must apply and be approved to employ program participants.

Check for availability of similar programs in your home state.
