SCOPE: Southern California Outreach for Pharmacy Education

SCOPE aims to educate and empower high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to explore pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences pathways. Students at USC Mann lead efforts as SCOPE ambassadors in three different programs: high school outreach, the Saturday Academy and the mentorship program.

The SCOPE program is supported by funding from USC Good Neighbors Campaign. The Mann School’s Office of Organizational Success and Well-Being provides support for this program.

High School Outreach

The SCOPE High School Outreach program is currently partnered with the following high schools across the Los Angeles Unified School District: John C. Fremont Senior High, Francisco Bravo Magnet Medical High School, Academy of Medical Arts at Carson Complex & Woodrow Wilson Senior High.

The outreach focuses on giving students a baseline level of knowledge of what the pharmacy practice area entails. A typical outreach event includes:

  • Overview of career pathways in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences
  • Interactive patient cases involving relevant disease states to the community (hypertension, diabetes, opioid use disorder, naloxone administration and more)
  • Higher education pathway guidance
  • Q&A with student ambassadors
  • Mental health and clinical pharmacy presentations

SCOPE Saturday Academy

SCOPE Opens Pathways for Underserved Students

Students started SCOPE Saturday Academy in fall 2022 to provide high school students an introduction and pathway to pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences as potential career options.
