The office of Continuing Professional Development at USC Mann provides pharmacists with continuing education programs and skills needed to provide excellent patient care. Our programs are tailored to the lifelong learning and advanced practice needs of alumni, preceptors, and other supporters (voluntary faculty, QSAD members).

We offer live and online training opportunities with active learning methods including workshops, roundtable discussions, and case studies.

The preceptor development continuing education course offerings provides pharmacists with the skills and knowledge for providing effective rotation experiences as preceptors. Participants will gain an understanding of the principles of precepting, such as building relationships, evaluation techniques, and goal setting. All USC preceptors should begin with the course Preceptor Survival Guide to Professional Experience Programs, followed by the other course topics such as the Pharmacist’ Patient Care Process, Cultural Competency in Pharmacy, DEI Preceptor Workshop, and Burnout Management and Prevention.  Upon completion of these courses, pharmacists will be better equipped to mentor and teach the next generation of pharmacists.

The Psychiatry for Population Health Pharmacists in partnership with the California Rights Med Collaborative will be held virtually. The session aims to advance the skills of pharmacists practicing in community pharmacies, clinics, and other outpatient settings in providing mental health medication management and/or identifying additional services needed by their patients, supporting a “whole person care” approach to managing patients’ physical and mental health conditions. Naloxone Rescue: The Pharmacist’s Role

Pharmacists can play an essential role in decreasing the deaths related to opioid overdose. According to AB-1535, effective April 10, 2015, pharmacists can furnish, without a prescription, naloxone kits to reverse opioid overdose. Pharmacists dispensing this potentially life-saving medication must complete one-hour of continuing education on the use of naloxone. Depression Assessment and Treatment

This online course is designed to provide instruction on the assessment and treatment of depression including suicide risk. Instruction on the mental status examination is provided along with guidance on when to refer patients for further evaluation. This online course was developed in response to California Assembly Bill 1114 that allows pharmacists to bill Medi-Cal for furnishing hormonal contraception and providing counseling on safe and effective contraception as authorized in Section 4052.9 of the Business and Professions Code.
