Tien M. H. Ng has been appointed chair of the Titus Family Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. A board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and nationally recognized expert in heart-failure management, Ng has served as interim chair of the department since February 2022. He was previously the department’s vice chair.
During Ng’s time as interim chair and vice chair, the Titus Family Department expanded its faculty and implemented innovative professional development and mentoring programs.
Under his continued direction, the department will keep thriving as a leader in fusing patient-centered care with health-system insights and analysis, notes USC Mann Dean Vassilios Papadopoulos.
“We look ahead to a bright future with Tien as chair of the Titus Family Department of Clinical Pharmacy,” Papadopoulos says. “I know he will continue to be focused on supporting the collective growth and success of our school, the Titus Family Department of Clinical Pharmacy, and the students, staff and faculty who teach, work and learn at USC Mann.”
One of only two pharmacists honored with admission into the inaugural group of Heart Failure Society of America fellows, Ng has two decades of research experience in heart-failure pharmacotherapy and pathophysiology.
He also has more than 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts to his credit, including publications in JAMA Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation. In addition, Ng was a past associate editor of the Journal of Cardiac Failure. He currently co-coordinates the cardiovascular therapeutics course in the PharmD program and is a preceptor of an acute care medicine advanced pharmacy practice experience rotation in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit of Los Angeles General Medical Center.
A 14-time recipient of Professor of the Year, he received the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2020 and the USC Mentoring Award from the USC Center for Excellence in Teaching in 2022, and was promoted to full professor in 2020.
Ng’s goals include supporting the growth of the department’s diverse education, outreach and research initiatives, and fostering the continued excellence of faculty in their academic and scholarly pursuits.
“USC Mann and the Titus Family Department have stood at the forefront of advancing our profession and enhancing patient lives through exceptional training, patient care, community service and research on national and international levels,” says Ng, who will officially become chair on July 1, 2024. “I look forward to overseeing implementation of our plans and witnessing the progress, both programmatically and for individual faculty productivity. I am humbled to have the opportunity to lead the Titus Family Department and USC Mann into a very promising future.”
