An Update from the Dean

Dear Friends of USC Mann,

Dean Vassilios Papadopoulos

Earlier this month, we celebrated the first day of the fall 2022 semester with a full, in-person return to campus. It was a joy to welcome our 366 new students—including the 179 members of the PharmD class of 2026—and 1,005 continuing students across 15 degree programs.

These students are the first who will get to experience our recently opened Margaret and John Biles Leadership Center, a state-of-the-art facility on the USC Health Sciences Campus designed specifically to create in-person opportunities for students to gather, collaborate and innovate.

Our Summer/Fall 2022 newsletter helps illustrate how the school opens new paths forward in clinical care, pharmaceutical science and education. We highlight new research and thought leadership, welcome incoming faculty, and highlight a new $1.3 million, five-year training grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to support Rising STARS (Scientific Training in Alcohol Research and Other Substances), a first-of-its-kind program to enhance diversity in the next generation of addiction scientists and confront the skyrocketing substance abuse epidemic.

Led by Daryl L. Davies, professor of clinical pharmacy and associate director of USC Institute for Addiction Science, this university-wide effort is just one example of the ways the school is collaborating with our partner schools in health sciences – Pharmacy, Social Work, Dentistry, Gerontology and Medicine – to drive the future of health care, biomedical research and transdisciplinary education.

We have much to look forward to this year. At the school, our mission is to advance health through pharmacy education, research and practice. Thank you for your support, which helps make it all possible.

Sincerely,

Vassilios Papadopoulos, DPharm, PhD, DSc (hon)
Dean, USC School of Pharmacy
