USC Pharmacy Graduates Concentrate on the Future

When the members of the class of 2017 accepted their PharmD degree in May, 24 of them earned an additional, prestigious distinction: the School’s new Area of Concentration certificate.

The USC School of Pharmacy Area of Concentration, introduced in the 2016-17 academic year, is one of the several ways USC pharmacy students can tailor their degree to reflect their interests and goals, or help them explore and find their passion – all while differentiating themselves in the job market.

Students can add a concentration by completing 12 units in one of the following areas:

  • Comprehensive Medication Management and High-Risk Populations
  • Education
  • Health Systems and Care Management
  • Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Public and International Health
  • Research
  • Pharmacy Entrepreneurship (new in 2017-18)

Maya Shehayeb, PharmD ’17, explains that pursuing an Area of Concentration in the pharmaceutical industry allowed her to combine her interest in business and clinical knowledge.

“I think it’s critical that Doctors of Pharmacy specialize in their fields,” says Shehayeb, who plans to complete a Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship in the 2017-18 year. “This leads to better job opportunities, an education tailored to your future career, and the fulfillment that comes from pursuing what makes you passionate.”
