Cornelius GatiPhD

Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Quantitative and Computational Biology

Department of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Cornelius Gati is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Bridge Institute, Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science in the group of Prof. Henry Chapman at the German Accelerator Laboratory DESY. The focus of his Ph.D. research was the development of the technique of serial crystallography at modern X-ray light sources, namely third generation synchrotrons and X-ray Free-Electron Lasers. After his Ph.D. he moved on to a PostDoc position with Dr. Sjors Scheres at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, where he learnt every aspect of single particle cryoEM.

In 2018 Dr. Gati started his career as an independent group leader at SLAC National lab and the Stanford School of Medicine, and he joined USC as an Assistant Professor in 2021. His research focuses on the structure determination of membrane proteins involved in synaptic transmission, using single particle cryoEM and X-ray crystallography.
