The USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is proud to announce the launch of a new Pharmacy Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) residency program. Set to begin in the 2026-27 academic year, the program is designed to prepare pharmacists for the unique challenges of serving the aging population across a variety of healthcare settings.
At the primary site, Los Angeles Jewish Health, the largest nonprofit, single-source provider of comprehensive senior healthcare in greater Los Angeles, residents will participate in drug regimen reviews, develop chronic disease management protocols and participate in a variety of interprofessional activities with healthcare professionals in long-term care and assisted living settings.
At UCI Health SeniorHealth Center, a participating site, residents will be embedded in a primary care geriatric practice, focusing on geriatric assessments, chronic disease management, screening for high-risk medications and reducing polypharmacy.
“One of our goals is to train the next generation of pharmacy leaders to work seamlessly within interprofessional teams, serving older adults: the fastest growing patient population in the United States and globally,” said residency program director Tatyana Gurvich, who has served as a geriatric clinical pharmacologist and clinical preceptor at USC Mann and UCI Health SeniorHealth Center since 2007. “By embedding residents in diverse settings—from a long-term care environment at Los Angeles Jewish Health to an ambulatory primary care geriatric clinic at UC Irvine Medical Center—we are preparing them to be essential voices in the holistic patient-centered care of older patients.”
Additionally, the resident will join other USC Mann PGY-1 residents in participating in USC Mann’s Academic Pharmacy Learning Experience (APLE) on the USC Health Sciences Campus, which includes a teaching certificate program, research training (including the option to earn a research certificate) and professional development and leadership activities.
“We are thrilled to offer a program that bridges the gap between various levels of geriatric care,” said Lisa Whittington, senior director of USC Mann residency programs. “This residency doesn’t just focus on clinical skills; through the APLE and our site partnerships, we are fostering well-rounded practitioners who are equally skilled in advanced pharmacotherapy, clinical research and academic leadership.”
The application deadline is Tuesday, January 20, 2026. For more information, interested candidates may contact Tatyana Gurvich, residency program director, at gurvich@usc.edu or Lisa Whittington, senior director of USC Mann Residency Programs, at lwgoldst@usc.edu.
