Bangyan L. Stiles, professor of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences, has been named the Boyd P. and Elsie D. Welin Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The five-year appointment became effective July 1, 2024, following the June 30, 2024 retirement of University Professor Emerita Jean Chen Shih, who was first named the holder of the professorship on October 26, 1988.

Stiles, who joined the USC Mann faculty in the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences in December 2005, was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2012 and full professor in 2016.

“One of the most distinguished honors that can be bestowed upon a professor is being the recipient of a named professorship,” noted Vassilios Papadopoulos, dean of the USC Mann School.

Over nearly two decades at USC, Stiles has built a successful research program that allows her team to explore the complicated pathogenesis of chronic disease and test the translational value of their discoveries.

“In addition to her robust research portfolio, Stiles is an excellent representative of the school and university who actively participates in teaching and service, consistently upholding the values of the school and the university at large,” Papadopoulos said.
