Gauri Rao, associate professor of clinical pharmacy and director of the Quantitative Drug and Disease Modeling Center at USC Mann, has received the inaugural Meindert Danhof Talent Award, an international honor recognizing outstanding research in the field.
The award was presented on Tuesday, April 7, at the 2026 Quantitative Systems Pharmacology Conference (QSPC) in Leiden, the Netherlands.
Named for Meindert Danhof, emeritus professor at Leiden University, the award recognizes a scientist whose research advances the field of mechanistic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) and quantitative systems pharmacology.
International honor highlights research excellence

In presenting the award, Rob van Wijk, assistant professor at Leiden University, described Rao as the “ideal candidate” for the honor.
“She has developed innovative methodologies that integrate state-of-the-art experimental and computational modeling approaches,” Van Wijk said.
These integrated approaches, applied in infectious disease research, enable the design of translational strategies to advance the understanding of anti-infective drug action and optimize treatments, he said.
Further, Rao’s research has primarily focused on severe drug-resistant Gram-negative infections, an area of high unmet medical need. Her work has helped scientists better understand drug-resistant bacterial infections and identify more effective treatment strategies.
“I’m truly honored and deeply grateful for this recognition,” Rao said. “It is especially meaningful to receive an award that celebrates Professor Meindert Danhof’s vision and his enduring contributions to mechanistic PK/PD and quantitative systems pharmacology.”
In addition to her research accomplishments, Rao is a frequent speaker at international conferences and an advocate for training the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists. Colleagues noted her strong commitment to mentoring students and early-career researchers.
