Jiao to Receive 2026 ISPOR Bernie J. O’Brien New Investigator Award

Boshen Jiao will receive the 2026 ISPOR Bernie O’Brien New Investigator Award.

The award, to be presented at ISPOR 2026 in Philadelphia in May, honors a researcher with exceptional promise based on technical and scholarly contributions to health economics and outcomes research. 

Jiao’s work develops and applies advanced methods in economic evaluation, health outcomes research and value of information analysis to address policy-relevant questions in healthcare. More recently, his work has also focused on incentives for medical innovation. His research has informed value assessment guidelines developed by health technology assessment bodies and academic societies. 

A USC faculty member since 2024, Jiao is an assistant professor of pharmaceutical and health economics at the USC Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and a scholar at the USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics.

Jiao has received multiple honors, including the HEOR Excellence in Methodology Award and Best General Podium Presentation Award from ISPOR, the Lee B. Lusted Prize from the Society for Medical Decision Making, and the CHE Research Fellowship Award from the University of York. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including three articles recognized as Editor’s Choice in Value in Health. He serves on the editorial board of PharmacoEconomics

Before joining USC, Jiao completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. He earned a PhD in health economics and outcomes Research from the University of Washington, an MPH from the EHESP French School of Public Health, and a BA in Economics from Fudan University.

Jiao is the second USC Mann faculty member to receive the award in its 22-year history. William Padula, associate professor of pharmaceutical and health economics, received the award in 2021.
